Birkebeinerne (The Last King) 2016
Nils Gaup is known for making movies about norwegian history and culture, among his work are; Ofelaš/Pathfinder (1987), Kautokeino-opprøret/The Kautokeino Rebellion (2008) and now Birkebeinerne/The Last King. The Story follows two birkebeinar who are on a mission to bring the now infant heir to the norwegian throne to safety from the bagler-perople. Some ski-scenes in this movie are pretty entertaining to watch, a few comedic scenes appear and it is always nice to see a movie about norwegian culture and history. Also decent performances from the two main actors Kristofer Hivju and Jakob Oftebro. But the screenplay is pretty simple and sometimes dull. The story is not entertaining enough and we don’t get to know the characters as well as we should. The fighting scenes seems very generic and the slow-motion effect is not fully utilize enough and becomes a gimmick. Overall it was a decent movie but could have been much better.
